Arcadis Expands Global Collaboration with Shell: Revolutionizing Workplace Design (2025)

Imagine a world where every office, every workspace, is perfectly designed for collaboration, efficiency, and sustainability. That's the bold vision at the heart of a major new partnership. But here's where it gets controversial... can a truly global standard for workplace design ever really address the unique needs of diverse local cultures and work styles?

Arcadis, a global leader in sustainable design, engineering, and consultancy solutions (EURONEXT: ARCAD), has just announced a significant expansion of its collaboration with Shell Global Solutions International. This isn't just another contract; it solidifies a relationship built over 75 years of trust and successful projects.

The new five-year framework agreement, commencing in January 2026 with a possible two-year extension, centers around Architecture and Design (A&D) services. Arcadis will essentially become Shell's go-to provider for integrated workplace architecture and design across Shell’s vast global real estate portfolio, encompassing Europe, the Middle East, and Africa (EMEA), the Americas, and the Asia-Pacific region. Think of it as a global makeover for Shell's offices, all orchestrated by Arcadis.

And this is the part most people miss... It’s not just about aesthetics. This partnership aims to streamline and standardize Shell's workplace design processes globally. Arcadis will act as a single point of contact for Shell's architectural, design, engineering, and branding requirements. This is supported by Arcadis' Global Excellence Centres and their team of multidisciplinary design experts. Initially, around 60 Arcadis specialists will be dedicated to the program, but this number could scale up to over 100. They'll be using cutting-edge AI-enabled processes and digital tools, combined with traditional engineering and technical skills, to ensure consistent, high-quality delivery, no matter where the project is located.

Shell's driving force behind this agreement is a desire for strategic, global-level collaborations. By standardizing processes and designs, they aim to achieve streamlined project delivery and improved consistency across their diverse assets. Arcadis' role is to help Shell achieve greater quality, efficiency, and, crucially, flexibility, allowing them to adapt to future business demands. For example, imagine Shell wanting to quickly implement a new type of collaborative workspace across all its European offices. This agreement is designed to make that kind of rapid scaling possible.

This isn't Arcadis and Shell's first rodeo. Their collaboration already includes environmental remediation programs, consultancy services, and mobility infrastructure projects. This new A&D agreement builds on that solid foundation. Arcadis aims to leverage its technical expertise, global reach, and commitment to safe, local delivery to create workplaces for Shell that promote collaboration, efficiency, sustainability, and employee well-being. It's about creating spaces where people want to work, and where they can thrive.

Hendrik-Jan Bakhuizen, Global Account Leader for Shell at Arcadis, emphasized the strong foundation of their relationship: "Our relationship with Shell is built on trust, innovation, and safe delivery. From environmental consultancy and decommissioning to mobility and energy transition, we have adapted to Shell’s evolving needs."

He added, "This new relationship now brings our Architecture and Urbanism expertise into the heart of Shell’s architecture and workplace design, helping shape sustainable, innovative, and future-ready spaces across the globe."

Arcadis CEO Alan Brookes echoed this sentiment, stating: "This agreement is about more than workplace design; it reflects the evolution of a longstanding relationship that spans multiple decades."

Brookes went on to say, "By combining Arcadis’ global delivery capabilities with our deep understanding of Shell’s ambitions, we are helping to reimagine the future of work environments and develop solutions aimed at supporting people and communities, while seeking to reduce environmental impact. It demonstrates the value of working as ‘One Arcadis’ to support Shell at scale, wherever they operate."

But here's a question worth considering: In the pursuit of global standardization, is there a risk of overlooking the unique cultural nuances and local preferences that make a workplace truly effective for its employees? Can a one-size-fits-all approach truly foster the collaboration and well-being that Arcadis and Shell are aiming for? What are your thoughts? Share your opinions in the comments below!
