Bold claim: Auburn is strengthening its defense by keeping more than just the head coach on board for next season. In addition to defensive coordinator DJ Durkin, defensive tackles coach Vontrell King-Williams will also remain with the Tigers, multiple sources confirm to AuburnSports.com.
King-Williams has led Auburn’s defensive tackles since 2024 after being promoted from defensive line analyst. His continued presence on the staff is expected to bolster roster retention and add significance to several Auburn commitments and targets on Signing Day.
Since stepping into the role, King-Williams has emerged as one of the brightest young assistants in college football. In 2024, Auburn’s run defense ranked 27th nationally. True freshman Malik Blocton earned freshman All-America honors under King-Williams, and three veterans from the defensive line signed with NFL teams.
Meanwhile, King-Williams helped recruit a strong defensive line class for 2025, featuring four four-star prospects: Malik Autry, Jourdin Crawford, Darrion Smith, and Antonio Coleman.
The defensive line continued to advance in 2025, ranking 11th nationally in rushing defense. The Tigers allowed an average of 99.3 rushing yards per game, which stood as the fourth-best figure in the SEC.
