Dr. Pazdur, an experienced oncologist with a tenure at the FDA since 1999, was seen as a beacon of stability for an agency that has been facing considerable turbulence, particularly during the second Trump administration. He stepped into the role of leading the FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research on November 11, taking over from George Tidmarsh. Tidmarsh's exit followed an investigation and a lawsuit alleging he misused his position for personal vendettas. The scandal led one venture capital investor to describe the agency as a "clown show," while drug industry groups criticized the FDA for being erratic and unpredictable.
Initially, Pazdur's appointment was met with optimism by agency insiders, industry representatives, and patient advocacy groups, as reported by The Washington Post. But this positive outlook quickly changed.
But here's where it gets controversial... Within days of starting, Pazdur voiced serious concerns about the legality and potential public health risks associated with FDA Commissioner Marty Makary's plans to overhaul and expedite agency operations. On November 21, the Post reported that Pazdur disagreed with Makary's plans to reduce the number of studies needed for drug-related decisions, such as label changes. Pazdur also worried that Makary's plan to speed up drug review times lacked transparency and could be illegal. Furthermore, he opposed Makary's proposal to exclude agency career scientists from certain drug review processes that were considered political priorities.
