What’s a latte?

A latte is an espresso based coffee that is typically ⅓ espresso, ⅔ milk with a layer of milk foam on top where you may find latte art. To make it an iced latte, ice is added.

So this recipe is a latte because we are using espresso and milk.

You may have come across our other cold coffee recipes. These range from iced coffee and cold brew coffee to iced macchiatos and iced lattes. What’s the difference between all of these?

Cold brew coffee, like in our cold foam for cold brew coffee recipe, is made by steeping coarsely ground coffee for at least 12 hours. No hot water is used, just plenty of time.

Iced coffee, like in our 5 minute Keurig iced coffee, is made with coffee brewed hot in any style you choose. After brewing, add ice and it’s iced coffee.

An iced latte differs from these two because it contains espresso and the majority of the drink is milk.

Meanwhile, cold brew coffee or iced coffee may contain milk, but usually just a small amount.

Espresso

Use your favorite coffee beans to make espresso. I chose Illy Whole Bean Intenso, which is a bold dark roast that works great brewed as an espresso.

To make the espresso, I used a stovetop moka pot.

If you do not have an espresso machine at home, this is the next best option to make espresso. And if you don’t have a moka pot either, try making espresso with a French press. The goal is to make a concentrated coffee.

Honey

I used my favorite Nature Nate’s raw honey. Unlike regular honey, raw honey is not pasteurized. Regular honey is usually put under high heat, which results in the loss of some nutrients that raw honey has.

Raw honey does not undergo the high heat but is tested to make sure it’s clean. Nature Nate’s California Honey is made by California bees.

Ice Cubes

While I’d usually use coffee ice cubes, this time I went for regular ice cubes. Coffee ice cubes solves the diluted coffee problem.

If you’d like to make it and find out how to make flavored ones too, check out our recipe.

Milk

You can use whole milk, skim milk or any of your favorite milk alternatives. For my iced honey lattes, I switch between oat milk and almond milk. For this recipe, I used an almond milk barista blend. These barista blends are made to froth like regular milk.

It’s optional, but if you like to have a little foam on top of your lattes, you can put the barista blend milk of choice into a mason jar, shake it and when you pour it on top of the ice and coffee, it will leave you with some foam.
