The Rubicon version of the Wrangler is seriously capable when you take it off-road. There is a whole lot of off-road hardware fitted in this model as standard. It comes with heavy-duty Dana 44 solid axles with a sophisticated transfer case and locking front and rear differential, heavy-duty shocks, full-time transfer case with low-range gear, and 255/75 R17 knobby tires. The front sway bar can be electronically disconnected by a switch on the dash allowing 30 per cent more suspension travel.

The Rubicon is fairly fun to drive, too. It is powered by a 2.0-litre, four-cylinder turbo-petrol engine that puts out 268bhp of power and 400Nm of max torque and is paired to the ZF-sourced eight-speed automatic gearbox as standard.

• The Wrangler comes into its own when you take it off-road. It’s got immense ground clearance, large tyres, and heavy-duty off-road hardware. The confidence that it gives its driver from its stock ride height, knobby tyres, and sophisticated drivetrain is incredible. It also has good approach and departure angles, making it easy to navigate through trails that one is not familiar with.
• The Wrangler’s form factor and the ride height also lend it unmatched road presence. It manages to tower above most of the vehicles around it. It is bang-on as a lifestyle vehicle that you can flaunt, gets everyone’s attention, and to say that its street presence is imposing is an understatement.
• The Wrangler’s two-litre turbocharged petrol engine is quite impressive. It’s a refined and vibe-free engine with a nice soundtrack. Floor the throttle, and the Wrangler charges ahead with a fervour that’s unexpected in a hardcore 4x4.

Features missing in the Wrangler:

• We wish there was a diesel engine on offer for the Wrangler. Not that the petrol engine suffers when off-roading, but having a torquey diesel for off-roading is quite assuring. Also, a big and heavy 4x4 like the Wrangler would be better off with a diesel engine when it comes to fuel efficiency.

• There is no real trade-off in cabin space and features for the Jeep Wrangler. It’s nowhere as barebones as you would expect in a hardcore 4x4.
• In fact, it comes with leather upholstery, all-four power windows (despite the fact that all four doors are removable), dual-zone climate control, eight-speaker music system combined with an 8.4-inch touchscreen with voice command, navigation, along with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
• Storage-wise there are two large cup holders and a massive storage compartment under the armrest.
• The removable doors have a thin net that can be used for storing small items. Then, the rear seats are upright with no adjustment option and the seat base length is short.
• It comes with a foldable armrest with cup holders, two USB ports, and a 12V output.
• The boot is large and cavernous. The Wrangler’s party trick is its roof and doors, which are easily removable. Just a few latches and the front-row roof would come off on the go.
