The Box Office Battle: 'Predator: Badlands' Takes the Lead

And get this: if 'Badlands' keeps up its momentum, it might just break the record for the biggest theatrical opening in the 'Predator' franchise. The current holder? The 2004 crossover hit, 'Alien vs. Predator', which opened with $38 million. But here's the catch - the 'Predator' series has been absent from theaters for a while now. The last two entries, 'Prey' and 'Predator: Killer of Killers', premiered directly on streaming platforms.
Directed by Dan Trachtenberg, 'Badlands' stars Dimitrius Schuster-Koloamatangi as a young Predator outcast and Elle Fanning as his legless android companion. With a production budget of $105 million, Disney is hoping for a better performance than their recent sci-fi venture, 'Tron: Ares', which cost $180 million and underperformed.
'Badlands' has received positive reviews, and early audiences have given it an 'A-' grade. This bodes well for its word-of-mouth reputation in the coming weeks.
Among the other new releases, Amazon MGM Studios' 'Sarah's Oil' is expected to finish in fourth place, with a projected weekend gross of $4.4 million. Sony Pictures Classics' historical drama, 'Nuremberg', is also in the running for fifth place, despite mixed reviews.
Mubi's 'Die My Love', starring Jennifer Lawrence and Robert Pattinson, is the widest release for the indie banner, but it has received a disappointing 'D+' grade from Cinema Score. Black Bear Pictures' 'Christy', starring Sydney Sweeney, is also facing a challenging opening, with a quiet start and respectable but not stellar reviews.
