A stormy performance from Adam Rossington has kept Pokhara Avengers' playoff hopes alive, and what a storm it was!
Rossington, a seasoned cricketer from England, stepped up to the plate (quite literally!) and delivered a batting masterclass that had everyone talking. With a unique stance and an explosive swing, he dominated the TU International Cricket Ground in Kirtipur on Tuesday.
But here's where it gets interesting... Rossington took his time, playing cautiously at first. He faced a few dot balls before finding his rhythm. And when he did, watch out! He launched an incredible assault on the bowlers, smashing 11 fours and 7 sixes in a single innings! By the time the first innings concluded, he had powered Pokhara to an impressive 201/2 in just 20 overs. An absolute powerhouse performance!
This century was a historic moment for the NPL, marking only the third time a player has achieved this feat, and the second century of the season. It's a record-breaking achievement, and Rossington's name will go down in the league's history books.
Pokhara's opening partnership with skipper Kushal Bhurtel showed promise, but it was Rossington's 127-run collaboration with his English teammate, Jason Roy, that truly stole the show. Roy, an experienced player with over 100 ODIs under his belt, fell just short of his maiden fifty. However, Rossington's stay at the crease alongside Dhananjaya Lakshan, the Sri Lankan all-rounder, ensured Pokhara's dominance.
"It was a great feeling," Rossington humbly admitted after the match. "The partnership with Roy took the pressure off, and we worked well together."
But defending a 200+ target wasn't easy, as the pitch favored the batters. Mark Watt, the season's first centurion, got Karnali off to a flying start, smashing maximums and keeping the momentum going. However, as wickets started to fall, the pressure mounted. And this is the part most people miss... Watt, who was batting brilliantly, attempted his sixth six but was caught out in the deep cover point. Rossington highlighted the importance of this wicket, stating, "It was crucial for us."
With this win, Rossington has become the leading run-scorer of the NPL Season 2, accumulating an impressive 253 runs in just five innings. He's followed closely by Watt and Ravi Bopara.
The Yaks' coach, Raju Basnyat, attributed their loss to a lack of good partnerships and momentum. He emphasized the need for more tournaments at the provincial and district levels to improve the performance of domestic players against experienced international competitors.
Pokhara's win has propelled them to the fourth position in the points table, with two wins in five matches. Meanwhile, the Yaks' playoff hopes are dashed after their fifth consecutive loss.
In other news, the defending champions, Janakpur Bolts, finally secured their first win of the season against Chitwan Rhinos. Led by the experienced Wayne Parnell, Anil Kumar Sah made a stylish comeback, smashing 61 off 36. The Bolts chased down the 177-run target with 15 balls to spare, thanks to some solid batting performances.
The Rhinos' Dawid Malan and Arjun Saud put up a good fight with a 112-run partnership, but it wasn't enough to stop the Bolts' momentum. Malan, who scored an impressive 80 off 54, admitted that they might have fallen short of runs while batting first.
So, what do you think? Is Rossington's performance a game-changer for Pokhara? And will the Bolts be able to regain their momentum and defend their title? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!
