Some Interesting Small Boat Trailers (2024)

Article By Shorty
I have always liked small boat trailers, and have pretty much given up cartopping because small trailers are so easy to use for transporting and storing just about any type of boat.

Some Interesting Small Boat Trailers (1)There are 2 key elements to my love of boat trailers
First is my trailer dolly.
When I get home from the lake, it is just so simple to unhook my trailer and wheel it around. I find that a 500 lb boat is about the biggest I can wheel thru my yard, and 1800 lbs is the biggest that I can push around the street and up my driveway.

Some Interesting Small Boat Trailers (2)The second key item is the large gate I built on the side of my house.
It is wide enough that I can roll any highway legal boat into my back yard. Depending on what boats I have in stock at the time, I roll them around in various spots, hiding them from my wife. Luckily she can't tell the difference between them, so whenever a new one arrives and that curious statment comes from her mouth "Is that a new boat over there"? I just try to play it off as the boat that was over there behind the other one, and I just re-arranged. :)

Some Interesting Small Boat Trailers (3)This is a very simple and cheap trailer that various manufacturers make. It is simply a rectangle of heavy angle iron, bolted onto a long tongue. Couldn't get any simpler, but works great for small light loads.

Some Interesting Small Boat Trailers (4)This is a trailer I like to call a "Kayak Stick". It is the smallest trailer I have seen so far, basically just a tongue with a cross bar attached to it. They are very skinny, if you had a very narrow side yard or just a little bit of space in your garage, this would be an ideal trailer.

Some Interesting Small Boat Trailers (5)One of the problems with trailering small and light boats is that most trailer springs are built to carry atleast 1000 lbs (rather a pair carries that). So if your boat only weighs 100 lbs, the stiffness of the springs makes it seem like there are no springs at all and all the jarring force from pot holes is transmitted directly to the hull. Making a good set of bunks such as the ones in the Holder 12 sailboat bunk board article can help distribute this force around the hull making it an easier ride.

Some Interesting Small Boat Trailers (6)This is a trailer made for a sunfish that addresses the stiff spring problem. The springs were taken apart, and only one leaf was used. One end of it is u-bolted to a cross bar, while the other end is u-bolted to the axle. It is a really springy trailer, and works very well.

Some Interesting Small Boat Trailers (7)When hauling multiple types of boats on a trailer, the distance from the winch post to the axle needs to be adjusted to get the proper tongue weight. Most trailers have an adjustable winch post, but there are others that have a movable axle instead. Like this one, the axle is often attached to a simple rectangle frame which is u-bolted to the main frame or just a stick for a tongue. You then slide the axle assembly forward or aft till it is the proper weight for the boat you are carrying.

Some Interesting Small Boat Trailers (8)Here is a homemade trailer that was constructed mostly of angle iron. I have seen bed frames at thrift shops that could be purchased for almost nothing, have wondered about making a trailer from that.

Some Interesting Small Boat Trailers (9)Here is a good example of a rather flimsy homemade trailer. I was giving away landscaping rock and a family showed up with this hunk of junk. It was constructed of various pieces of trash metal, such as fence posts and parts off industrial machines.

Some Interesting Small Boat Trailers (10)The axle assembly was also of an interesting nature, there was only one spring in the middle which the bed rested on. The bed had all sorts of play and bounced around in all directions. Needless to say, they overloaded the trailer and blew a tire, bent the axle and abandoned it in my cul-de-sac.

Some Interesting Small Boat Trailers (11)The smallest and cheapest of the Harbor Freight trailers sure gets around, here is one example where a long tongue and cross supports were added to turn it into a viable boat trailer.

Some Interesting Small Boat Trailers (12)This is sort of an extreme example, showing what a little creativity can come up with.

Here are some other variations of bolt together trailers:
PWC boat trailer
40" x 48" utility trailer
4ft. x 8ft. Steel Folding Utility Trailer
Galvanized Boat Trailer

Some Interesting Small Boat Trailers (13)Have 2 board boats and want to carry them together? You can either back the trailer and launch one boat, then back some more and launch the other boat, or just hand carry them to the water since you probably have a 2nd person with you anyway.

Some Interesting Small Boat Trailers (14)Have you ever noticed that huge amount of space between the hulls of a hobie? What a great place to stash another boat. Some people use smaller boats towed behind a hobie as a way to carry their camping gear. Also I have seen a lot of utility boxes and sail storage tubes built onto the frame of trailers. The thing to keep in mind is that everything left in the box gets wet when you launch your boat.

Some Interesting Small Boat Trailers (15)If you are a boat-aholic like me, you need to learn to weld, so you can make various boat dollies from scrap materials and a kids bike from the thrift shop. I made a couple of these and they are very useful !!

Some Interesting Small Boat Trailers (16)

Simple as can be, just some angle iron, a long pipe and parts from a bicycle. I bought a couple of kid bikes for $5 each at a local thrift shop.

You can see the welder I have, it is a very simple 110 volt welder that uses a special flux core wire. It is very handy, I don't need any special outlets, I can plug it into just about any regular 110 outlet (or 120 volt) or even and extension cord and then use it to weld.

Inside the welder it holds a spool of the special wire, then the welder will feed that out the nozzle which is used for the welding. As the arc starts, the flux core vaporizes to create the gas shield to faciliate the welding. That spool of wire is pretty cheap too, only like ten bucks.

Some Interesting Small Boat Trailers (17)My original need was for something to build cardboard boats on, and then to carry the boats to the race.I carry the dolly and race boat on top of my harbor freight trailer, then at the race I can slide the dolly off and wheel it over to the pit area.

Some Interesting Small Boat Trailers (18)I am always scrounging up a new junk hull to fixup. They used to lay in various spots in my yard, but now I keep them up on the dollys. Easy to wheel around and work on.

Some Interesting Small Boat Trailers (19)On my big cardboard race boat, I made a huge flat bed for the boat to lay on. Helps keep the bottom flat till next year's race. The bar on top is to lay the rain cover on.

Some Interesting Small Boat Trailers (20)I was at my daughter's football game and saw some interesting trailers behind the school we were at. There were various pieces of equipment for maintaining the fields, and this simple trailer that was made from the axle of a car.

Some Interesting Small Boat Trailers (21)It didn't have any springs or suspension, just looked like it was the axle with some angle iron welded on top.

Not sure what it was used for, but looks like a cheap way to make a trailer.

What are the two types of boat trailers? ›

Boat trailers are sold in two basic types: bunk and roller.

How much does a 20 ft single-axle boat trailer weigh? ›

How far should your boat trailer be in the water? ›

It should be just about as deep as it was when taking the boat off, and in most cases, about two-thirds of the trailer will be submerged while one-third remains out of the water. Don't submerge the trailer too deep, or the bow of the boat may float over the bunks and go off to the side.

What is better rollers or bunks for a boat trailer? ›

If you're using “good” ramps most of the time, go with bunks and enjoy some savings.
