A Dengue Dilemma: Unraveling Chattogram's November Mystery
In the vibrant city of Chattogram, Bangladesh, a peculiar phenomenon has been unfolding over the past few years. Despite dengue's typical peak season between July and October, the city experiences a surprising surge in cases every November. This trend has left health experts and locals alike scratching their heads.
According to official data, the numbers speak for themselves. In 2022, while July to October saw 2,640 cases, November alone reported a staggering 2,007. The pattern continued in 2023 and 2024, with November consistently recording a significant portion of the annual dengue cases.
But here's where it gets controversial: the number of cases drops sharply in December, leaving experts to ponder the reasons behind this unusual trend.
Dr Tauhidul Anwar, Deputy Civil Surgeon of Chattogram, sheds light on the matter. He emphasizes that dengue is no longer a seasonal disease in Bangladesh but has become endemic. The changing climate, with rising temperatures and shorter winters, has created an ideal breeding ground for Aedes mosquitoes.
"The rainy season's shift, now primarily between July and September, further exacerbates the issue," Dr. Anwar explains. He highlights the impact of changing rainfall patterns, where sporadic rainfall leaves stagnant water in potholes, providing perfect breeding conditions for mosquitoes.
And this is the part most people miss: humidity plays a crucial role too. Dr. Anwar notes that November's humidity levels have increased significantly, reaching 90-95%, creating an environment conducive to mosquito proliferation.
The Civil Surgeon's Office has identified 25 dengue hotspots across Chattogram, including Bandar, CEPZ, and Halishahar. Most patients are treated at Chattogram Medical College Hospital and Chattogram General Hospital, with private clinics also playing a role.
Dr Ekram Hossain, acting superintendent of Chattogram General Hospital, stresses the importance of early medical attention. "Many patients arrive late, making their condition critical. They should seek help as soon as warning signs appear," he advises.
Chief Health Officer Dr Imam Hossain Rana emphasizes the need for community awareness and action. City workers regularly spray mosquito repellents and larvicides, but residents must also take responsibility to prevent water accumulation around their homes.
