The biggest IT outage across the world just happened. Planes were grounded, hospitals and 911 dispatch centers were down, people couldn't turn their computers on, all on a massive global scale never seen before. So what is CrowdStrike, and how did this happen?Sources: https://lnkd.in/gUCkgXdS

Best explanation of the null pointer problem that caused the crowdstrike global outage. Simple errors like this should have been caught by a number of basic checks!

Last Friday was normal for some but for many the global IT outage for Crowdstrike customers caused outrage especially if you were in or heading to the airport. I’ve written little more here on CNS ‘s latest post, found a great summary of events which we’ve linked to for those that want to read more. #patchingprocess #testinghygiene #bluescreenofdeath

Watching this Crowdstrike issue unfold is like a Hollywood script, full of plot twists and turns, while also being a rehash of past 'scripts'. I can't help thinking about other full blown meltdowns that, like Crowdstrike, didn't have the help of cyberattacks. Some specific instances come to mind - Blackberry 4-day outage in 2011 affecting over 30 million users' emails - AT&T network outage in 1990 affecting 60,000 calls, cancelling 500 flights - AWS S3 outage in 2017 for 4 hours caused companies to lose over $150MI'm sure there are others, Delta and British Airways being part of this group. Point being, events like these show the power of black swan events in our lives.Black Swan events, described by Dr. Nassim Nicholas Talebas "high-profile, hard-to-predict, and rare events that are beyond the realm of normal expectations".Food for thought on other black swan events#blackswan #Crowdstrike

On Friday, July 19th 2024, #CrowdStrike accidentally took down much of the world's Internet, as well as some banks, airports, hospitals, and some emergency services. This video appears to be a quick technical description what happened. Basically, CrowdStrike pushed out an update, which contained a null driver for it's Falcon EDR, which computers required to run. By the time CrowdStrike fixed this, many computers already received the update and were unresponsive. As such, each computer required someone to manually resolve, from a recovery mode.

I was at the ER early this morning when about half their computers crashed, and an announcement came over the PA about technical issues which could delay treatment. I was a little skeptical when I heard "Microsoft broke our computers," but was happy I didn't need to fix it. After hearing this was a Crowdstrike issue, and knowing other endpoint vendors have had similar issues in the past, my first reaction was to buy a few shares of discounted CRWD. Then I started thinking, organizations go all-in on their EPP vendor, doesn't matter the tech, buy the license and push to every endpoint. Maybe it's past time to reconsider that approach, put half your assets on Crowdstrike and the other half on SentinelOne or other EPP. The likelihood of both crashing on the same day is minimal, and if one does crash, airplanes still fly and hospitals still process patients. Yes, it will cost more in licensing, and management, but what will the final cost of the current outage be?

what is happened it is very strange, I don't know what is the deal between Crowdstrike and Microsoft but this error is fatal for both company. I remember when I was in telecom core network domain, the process was very clear : nothing can be injected on the production without the validation of test team, and because this domain was really critical for the telco operator, we choose one site as a pilot then we let it under monitoring some days before to generalize it to other sites. Sometimes even the big company can make mistakes. The question now, What impact will it have on the brand image of both companies? To be continued...
